Barbara Walking in the Valley
A bi-weekly column, featuring one Silicon Valley Christian's (a)musings on life's journey

by Barbara Dahlgren

New Year ~ New Beginnings
Column for the weeks of January 1-15, 2010

As 2009 closes and 2010 begins, New Year’s quotes fill our thoughts.  Quotes like…

“An optimist stays up until midnight to see the New Year in.  A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves.  ~Bill Vaughan

“Be always at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let each new year find you a better man.”  ~Benjamin Franklin

“Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get it right.”  ~Oprah Winfrey

And of course we chuckle when we hear jokes about those New Year’s resolutions we vow to keep. Jokes like…

“May all your troubles last as long as your New Year's resolutions.” ~Joey Adams

“A New Year's resolution is something that goes in one year and out the other.” ~Author Unknown

My new year is a time of new beginnings. I’ve thought about starting a blog for a while and a new year seems an appropriate time to take the plunge. So I bid a fond adieu to this Walking in the Valley column I’ve done for eight years. I plan to focus on Barbara’s Blog. I know the name isn’t cute or clever, but everyone has to start somewhere. Besides it is a work in progress so changes will be inevitable. I’m really just trading one writing avenue for another and I hope you will join me at www.barbdahlgren.com to check it out.

Don’t expect too much to begin with. Barbara’s Blog had a modest Internet entrance, but will be making improvements along the way. The journey of a thousand steps begins with just one, and a blog with a thousand updates begins the same way. In spite of the above jokes about New Year’s resolutions, my resolve is to update it at least weekly. My topics will be similar to what I covered in the Walking in the Valley articles with an underlying theme of taking my faith, but not myself too seriously.

So I am ringing out the old year and ringing in the new! Ring-a-ding ding! May all the clouds in your life form only a background for a beautiful sunset. Happy New Year!

“Glory to God in highest heaven, Who unto man His Son hath given; While angels sing with tender mirth, A glad new year to all the earth.” ~ Martin Luther
