Barbara Walking in the Valley
A weekly column for those who live and walk in Silicon Valley

by Barbara Dahlgren

Oh The Irony Of It All!
Column for the week of December 15-21, 2002

So one atheist was Christmas shopping with another atheist. The mall was crowded but people were jolly. The Yuletide music was blaring and all of a sudden atheist #1 starts singing aloud to the song, "O come let us adore Him. O come let us adore Him. Christ the Lord."

Atheist #2 is appalled. "How can you sing that stuff?"

"Oh I don't listen to the words. I just like the music," he answers.

"Yeah, that's what my 15 year old says when he listens to explicit rock lyrics. But I don't believe him either."

It's hard to think of Christmas carols as containing explicit lyrics, but that's what it must seem like to people who don't believe in Christ. Yet, many who deny the virgin birth, yea, verily even His deity, celebrate Christmas. They just don't seem to get it. Chirst-mass! The day is about Christ. You can put up a tree, hang stockings, give presents, eat the turkey or ham, sing carols, and delude yourself into thinking you aren't celebrating the birth of Christ but without Him, there would be NO Christmas. The day exists because He was born.

Yes, I know Biblical scholars have mixed views about when He was born. No one knows the date. But they don't deny that He existed. His birth fulfilled hundreds of Old Testament prophecies. He was rejected because people were looking for a king not a baby. The irony was that the baby was a king! That baby brought salvation to mankind. Christ the Savior was born. Read Luke 2 and see what rejoicing there was over this blessed event! I can't help but believe that God smiles when we rejoice also.

Speaking of smiling, you know that God has a sense of humor. (If you don't think so just read Numbers 22:20-35) He must laugh when He sees those who deny His existence, celebrate Christmas, in spite of the commercialism. Oh, the irony of it all! It has to be funny to hear an atheist singing, "O come let us adore Him! O come let us adore Him! O come let us adore Him, Christ the Lord!"

Oh, what the hey? 'Tis the season to be jolly so sing even if you aren't an atheist! "O come let us adore Him! O come let us adore Him! O come let us adore Him, Christ the Lord."
